Dr. David Schmale is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, Physiology, and Weed Science at Virginia Tech. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and his B.S. from the University of California, Davis. One of the goals of his laboratory is to understand how microorganisms are transported over long distances in the atmosphere. His laboratory has developed technologies with drones to study microbial life hundreds of meters above the surface of the earth. Popular Science magazine named David one of 2013's Brilliant Ten.
